Another unrecorded IRC

Fantails 30, 54 and 57 recorded several types of International Reply Coupons for Burma that have been seen lately for sale. Recently, yet another LONDON type has emerged; this in in the older format but for the higher amount of 62 pyas. It is stated to have been issued in March 1964.

110th Anniversary of Yangon GPO Building

Myanmar Post issued single stamp to mark the 110th anniversary of Yangon GPO building.  The building was originally built by Scottish brothers James and George Bulloch in 1908. 

Myanmar Post invited interesting parties to submit the design concept for this commemoration through MPS.  Some members showed their interests and created an artworks.  Unfortunately, Myanmar Post just used simple portrait of Yangon GPO Building, due to late submissions.  Among the artworks, the concepts created by Wai Zin Paing are outstanding.  It featured the element of Yangon GPO building such as portico,  balusters and windows.   

Myanmar Post officials also satisfied with his design works.  So, they decided to use them in other ways.  Wai Zin's designs are used in first day cancellation, official first day cover, and four official postcards.  Wai Zin also helped Myanmar Post to design official stamp presentation folder, which was sold at 500K without the stamp.  Being the member of MPS, Wai Zin contributed to MPS first day cover.  As single designer contributed in many items, their designs shared the common features.      

Two controversial issues here is the stamp sheet preparation and missing country name.  The stamp do not show the country name in Burmese and English.  It just shows "100th anniversary of Yangon GPO building" in Burmese and "AD 1908-2018" in English.  Another issue is sheet preparation.  The Burmese wording touch the frame in some stamps, and some not.  It is obvious that it is not an registration shift of black, but the design inconsistency throughout the sheet.  Close observation tells that wording placement is same for the stamps in the same column.  It is concluded the wording for the whole column of 10 is copied and paste into five.

Air letter carried by first flight LH657

The air letter displayed below was carried by the Lufthansa first flight LH657 in 1974.  DC10 jet airliner made its first flight starting at Tokyo, then Anchorage – Hamburg – finally to Frankfurt.  A few copies of Burma air letter sheets were carried onboard and pictorial cachet was applied.  All copies in my hand were philatelic and cancelled at Yangon GPO on 18 Mar 1974.

 

Mandalay GPO New Counter Opening

On 2nd July 2018, Mandalay GPO has its official opening of new counters.  Myanmar officials attended the ceremony and officially launch the new counters into operation.  Myanmar Post sell the event postcard to public and provide commemorative date stamp for the event.  Collectors in Mandalay and Myanmar Post officials has an opportunity to grab them.

Four-nation Stamp Exhibition, 2018

Four-nation stamp exhibition aka Baliphex (2018) was held at I AM Bali 3D Interactive Museum, Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia from 7 to 8 August.  I have exhibited my five frames exhibit titled as "The Development of Letter Sheets of Burma (Later Myanmar) 1946 - 2001" under the postal stationary class.  And this exhibit hit 78 points and won the Vermeil medal and this exhibit is now qualified to be exhibited in international exhibitions.

This is the first time entry for this exhibit.  It show the various development of the letter sheets of Burma through the years from the first issue up to the year 2001.  The study of paper types, shades and colors, the different varieties, types of watermarks, their usages and new designs with postal rates.  It shows all the known air letter types of Burma through the total of 153 sheets.

အပြည်ပြည်ဆိုင်ရာတံဆိပ်ခေါင်းပြပွဲများကို အဆင့်အမျိုးမျိုးခွဲနိုင်ပါသည်။  National, FIAP နှင့် FIP တို့ဖြစ်ပါသည်။  National level ပြပွဲများကို National Federation ကဦးဆောင်ကျင်းပပေးပါသည်။  အမှတ်ပေးပုံမှာ FIP စံနစ်အတိုင်းအမှတ်ပေးပါသည်။  National level exhibition များသည် စုဆောင်းသူတို့အဖို့ ၄င်းတို့၏ exhibit ကိုနိုင်ငံတကာ FIP/FIAP ပွဲများဆီသို့ တက်လှမ်းနိုင်မည့် အခွင့်အရေးလဲ ဖြစ်ပါသည်။  National Level အဆင့်တွင် အမှတ် အနဲဆုံး ၇၅ မှတ် (သို့မဟုတ်) Vermeil အဆင့်ရရှိမှသာ နိုင်ငံတကာအဆင့်သို့ qualify ဖြစ်မည်ဖြစ်ပါသည်။  စင်ကာပူ၊ မလေးရှား၊ အင်ဒိုနီးရှားနှင့် ထိုင်းတို့အတူကျင်းပသော လေးနိုင်ငံတံဆိပ်ခေါင်းပြပွဲမှာ National Level ဖြစ်ပါသည်။
FIP နှင့် FIAP ပွဲများသည် နိုင်ငံတကာအဆင့် ပြပွဲများဖြစ်ပါသည်။  ပြပွဲများတွင် exhibit class များရှိပါသည်။  FIP မှ ကျင်းပပြီး ပြိုင်ပွဲဝင် class များအားလုံး ပါဝင်ပါက General World Exhibition ဟုခေါ်ပြီး။ class အချို့ရွေးချယ်ကာ ကျင်းပပါက Specialized World Exhibition ဟုခေါ်ပါသည်။  FIP မှ အသိအမှတ်ပြုသော အခြားပွဲများကို International Exhibition ဟုခေါ်ပါသည်။  အောက်ဖေါ်ပြပါ class များသည် FIP ပြပွဲများတွင် ပါဝင်နိုင်သော class များဖြစ်ပါသည်။

Jury များ၏လုပ်ငန်းတာဝန်များ

Jury နှင့် Judge မှာ အတူတူပင်ဖြစ်ပါသည်။ Jury များက ပြိုင်ပွဲဝင် exhibit များကို judge လုပ်ကြပါသည်။  FIP အသိအမှတ်ပြု ပြိုင်ပွဲများတွင် FIP အသိအမှတ်ပြု Jury များ 25% နှင့် National Federation မှ Jury ၂၅% ကို ခန့်အပ် အကဲဖြတ်စေရပါသည်။  ကျန် Jury များကို Exhibition Management မှ ရွေးချယ်ခန့်အပ်ရပါသည်။  FIP ပြပွဲများတွင် Jury အဖွဲ့ ၌ Jury များအပြင်၊ အသင် Jury များ၊ expert group များ ပါဝင်ရပါသည်။ အသင် Jury များနှင့် Expert group များမှာ မဲပေးခွင့် မရကြပါ။ အသင် Jury များမှာ FIP အဆင့် အမှတ်ပေးပုံကို လေ့လာသင်ယူကြရပြီး၊ expert group မှာ တံဆိပ်ခေါင်းပစ္စည်းများ အတုအစစ် အငြင်းပွားဖွယ်ရာရှိပါက ဆုံးဖြတ်ပေးရပါသည်။   Expert Group သည် Jury များတောင်းဆိုလာပါက ပြသထားသော တံဆိပ်ခေါင်းပစ္စည်းများကို စစ်ဆေးပေးရန် တာဝန်ရှိသည်။ အတုများစွာပြသထားပြီး အတုဟုဖေါ်ပြမထားပါက အဆိုပါ exhibit ကို ပြပွဲမှ ထုတ်ပယ်နိုင်သည်။  အတုများတွေ့ရှိပါက “ပြန်စစ်ဆေးပါ”၊ “နောက်တစ်ကြိမ်ပြသရန်မသင့်” စသည်ဖြင့် မှတ်ချက်များပေးလေ့ရှိသည်။

•    ပွဲကျင်းပရေး ကော်မတီသည် ထိုပွဲအတွက် FIP မှတစ်ပါး အခြားအဖွဲ့အစည်းများသို့ ပွဲကျင်းပခွင့် လျှောက်လွှာတင်သွင်းခြင်း မပြုရ (patronage ခံယူခြင်းမပြုရ)။

Who is/are Royalage?

Burma First Day Covers collectors may aware the term 'Royalage'.  The 1940 stamp centenary FDC prepared by Royalage - Rangoon is frequently seen in the market.  One of the example in my collection is addressed to Royalage, (Stamp Department), 218-37th St., Rangoon.

But based on that cover, the identity of Royalage cannot be proved yet.  Richard recorded the Royalage as as Dealer. A firm trading at 218, 37th St., Rangoon, incorporating a “Stamp Dept.” that produced first day covers for the 1940 stamp centenary and the one pie stamp" in his book Who Was Who in Burma Philately.  The FDC prepared by Royalage for one pie stamp and comment from Steven Zwillinger in his exhibit is displayed below for your viewing.

So, who is/are the Royalage? The puzzle of the royalage is solved when I discovered earliest FDC prepared by Royalage.  Royalage also prepared FDC for 1938 KGVI definitive issue.  But, no pictorial cachet was created and simple pen writing marks said First Day Cover.  The rubber stamp impression identifies Royalage as bankers and traders.  So, it can be confirmed that Royalage is a group of bankers and traders.  They have their own stamp department, which may be helping them in posting of mail, and philatelic service for hobbyist.

New booklet on the postal codes of Myanmar

Myanmar Postal Codes system was introduced in Burma on 12th Feb 1980.  Five digits postal codes defines as the post office identifier as well.  First two digits of the codes says the state or division of the PO, followed by two digits for township and last digit is PO ID.

In 1989, Post Office created a campaign to encourage the mail senders to make use of postal codes.  The boxed handstamp from various post offices appears on some of the mails.   One of the example is shown below.

Mingalar Taung Nyunt PO (Postal Code 11221)

Myanmar Post published the postal codes guides booklet, with details of postal codes of the POs around the country.  This year, we have seen, the new edition of booklet has been published by Myanmar Post.

Flaw or Tear?

I found something interesting in recent ebay listing, the 5R value of 1946 King George VI stamp has obvious white strip.   The strip cross the King's face from nose to mouth.  It is unclear from the photo uploaded by the seller, but I tried my luck to explore more of the strip, flaw or tear.

When the item arrived to me, I takes the microscopic photos of it and did analysis.  Based on the close up photos, it is assumed as a flaw.  One more analysis to do is to use electronics watermark detector to check the thickness of the stamp paper.  If it has same thickness throughout the stamp, it can be confirmed that as a flaw.  The close up view is displayed below.

Burma Aerogramme found in BOAC "Comet - York Peter" Crash, 1954

The B.O.A.C flight 781 crashed near the Elba Island, Italy on 10 Jan 1954.  The comet was operating the flight from Singapore to London via Rome where it made a stop at 10:30 AM.  20 minutes after take off, from Ciampino airport, the aircraft crashes take place when the Comet broke up in the air, near the Elba island.  All occupants were killed in the accident. 

  

The following day postal bags were recovered by a fishing boat and taken to Genoa by the steamer “Persia”.  The recovered mail bears several different cachets depending on the destination. Covers and aerogrammes sent from Burma to UK were found in these mails.  The aerogramme highlighted below is sent from Rangoon addressed to Scotland.

Unrecorded International Reply Coupons

More types of International Reply Coupons for Burma, previously unrecorded, continue to be discovered. Fantail 30 recorded a 4 annas value, and Fantail 54 recorded a 62 pyas value IRC. In a recent auction, a new type of 4 annas IRC has been found, and a 50 pyas coupon, which is an unrecorded value, has also been found. According to the auction catalog, the 4 annas value IRC type B was issued in April 1947, and the 50 pyas value IRC was issued in November 1958. The list of recorded ICR types is extended.

The 4 Annas Type B and 50 Pyas IRC were listed as uncut block of fours in Christoph Gärtner 40th Auction - Stamps (June 11th - 15th, 2018).  Minimum bid was set to 1000 Euro.  It's description stated "1947/1958. Lot of 2 different Intl. Reply Coupons (London type) each in an unused block of 4: one time "4 annas, issued April 1947", and one time "50 pyas, issued November 1958". Luxury quality. Collector's items from archives! (T)"

Thingyan Festival, new year for Burmese

Burmese new year starts from mid-April and celebration takes place four or five days.  It is known as Thingyan (Songkran in Thailand) and we splash water at others for the cleansing or purification of body.  For the purification of soul, we do good deeds like offering foods, taking care of elderly, setting animals free, etc. This year is 1380 in Burmese calendar, and new year starts from 17th April.  Ko Toe would like to take this opportunity to wish you all happy new year.

On this occasion, I want to share one postcard and postmark Myanmar Post produced for last year celebration.  The postcard was sold at Yasngon GPO on 4 April 2017, and pictorial cancellation was also provided.  Postmark did not specifically mention date.  The postmark shows atar-pot filled with seven kinds of flowers.

One controversial issue here is the copyright of the design element in the postcard.  Ko Hlwann Hmi and I found out that the couple in the design is a creative artwork of Ko Aung Kyaw Khin, done in 2012.  We have checked with the owner of the artwork, and he said he is not informed by anyone for the usage on the postcard.  The original digital artwork is shown below.

Salay Post Office

Salay PO is located in Salay township, Magwe Division.  I visited on 31 Jan 2017.  It is grade 3 post office and its postal code is 04172.  Click the link for location on the map.   The postmark is not clear.  Post office manager and staff helped to get clear postmark but failed. The nearest tourist attraction is Salay Yoke Sone Kyaung, Shinbin Maha Laba Man temple, Shinbin Sar Gyo Hla temple and Salay House.
