Closure of small post office in Yangon region

Myanmar Post has recently initiated the closure of several small post offices in the Yangon region, marking the initial steps in streamlining operations by phasing out underutilized postal facilities. This trend is expected to continue, potentially leading to the closure of additional post offices in the near future.

In the early months of 2023, a total of 18 post offices in the Mandalay and NayPyiTaw regions were also shut down. Recently, seven post offices from Yangon region ceased operations on April 1st, 2023. The last day of operation for these post offices was on March 31, 2023, and it's worth mentioning that our friends from Yangon created last-day-of-operation covers from six of these post offices.

I was informed that some post offices in Mandalay regions are closed permanently and no longer in service.  The last day of operation for these post offices is 31 Mar 2023.  The list of post offices is as follows:

Last Day of Operation - Mandalay Nantwin PO

We have learnt that Mandalay Nantwin post office was permanently closed in 2019.  Its last day of operation is 31 August.  Ko Sein Min prepared and made some "Last Day of Operation" covers.  Thanks for Ko Sein Minn for his efforts.  Mandalay Nantwin, Man Nantwin in short, has two postmarks used in last day.  I want to record the covers in this post.

Insein Post Office

Insein PO is located on Lanthit Road, near Insein park.  It is grade 1 post office and its postal code is 11011.  Please click the link for the location on the map.  It is just beside the Insein flyover.

I visited Insein PO on 22 Feb 2018 and sent a registered mail to myself to collect the postmark and registration mark.

There is no Registeration mark, but the box handstamp reading Insein in Burmese.  The registration number is manuscript-ed and separate date stamp was applied.  The letter arrived to Foreign Mail Exchange at Yangon on next day and applied duo color date stamp and trackable registration label was pasted before sending out to oversea country. 

Popa Post Office

Poppa PO or Popa PO is located in Poppa township, Myingyan district, Mandalay division.  Click the link for the exact location of the Popa post office.  It is grade 5 PO and its postal code is 05242.  I visited this PO on 31 Jan 2017.  I reached there in the late afternoon, so the post office was already closed.  So, I did not have a chance to send the registered mail.  Instead, I dropped the mail into the posting box hanging outside of the post office compound.

The letter was successfully delivered to me, but with some reasonable delays.  The nearest attractions to this POs are Mount Popa and its volcanic plug.

New Post Office - Hakha College PO

U Khin Maung Yee kindly informed me about the new post office.  It is also the good gesture of Myanmar Post expending its postal network, even though there was some PO closure last year, like Mandalay Nandwin PO closed in 2019.  Myanmar Post opened new post office at Hakha College.  The college is located in Hakha Township, Chin state.  First date of operation is 9 Mar 2020. Myanmar Post has 32 post offices in Chin state as of 2019.  The addition of this PO will make the list to 33. The following registered cover is early registered mail posted on 10 Mar 2020 at this PO, addressed to Yangon.  The cancellation was unclear, we assumed the PO's date stamp is not ready to use and they used Hakha PO stamp instead.  The mail arrived to Yangon GPO on 13 Mar, taking three days in transit, and to Tamwe PO on 15 Mar.

Yankin Post Office

Yankin PO is located at No 5, Thitsar Main Road, 1st Qtr, Yankin township.  It is situated in front of Yankin Education College.  Click the link for the exact location of the Yankin post office.  It is grade 2 PO and its postal code is 11081.  I visited this PO on 21 Feb 2018.

Kamayut Post Office

Kamayut PO is located at the corner of Adipadi Road and University Avenue Road, 9th ward, Kamayut township.  This PO is also known as Yangon University PO aka Rangoon University PO. Pazundaung Post Office

Bahan Post Office

Mandalay GPO New Counter Opening

On 2nd July 2018, Mandalay GPO has its official opening of new counters.  Myanmar officials attended the ceremony and officially launch the new counters into operation.  Myanmar Post sell the event postcard to public and provide commemorative date stamp for the event.  Collectors in Mandalay and Myanmar Post officials has an opportunity to grab them.

Salay Post Office

Salay PO is located in Salay township, Magwe Division.  I visited on 31 Jan 2017.  It is grade 3 post office and its postal code is 04172.  Click the link for location on the map.   The postmark is not clear.  Post office manager and staff helped to get clear postmark but failed. The nearest tourist attraction is Salay Yoke Sone Kyaung, Shinbin Maha Laba Man temple, Shinbin Sar Gyo Hla temple and Salay House.

Gwaycho Post Office

Gwaycho PO is located in Chauk twonship, Magwe Division.  I visited on 31 Jan 2017.  It is grade 5 post office and its postal code is 04173.  Click the link for location on the map.   The postmark is not that good and clear.  Post office manager and staff helped me clean the metal stamp, but failed to get clear postmark as it is severely damaged.  Month slug is inverted.

Chauk Post Office

Chauk PO is located in Chauk twonship, Magwe Division.  I visited on 31 Jan 2017 and get warm greeting by manager of the post office.  It is grade 2 post office and its postal code is 04171.  The nearest attraction is May Day square.  Click the link for location on the map.  The PO building is colonial building with long history of postal service.  Vintage metal plate with the words "LETTERS" is the door flap for the posting box embedded in the wall of building.

Theravada Buddhist University Post Office

Theravada Buddhist University Post Office is located at in Mayangone township, and it is not so far from Mayangone post office as well.  The PO is on Swel Daw Street, near to the Buddha Tooth Relic Pagoda. It is grade 3 PO, of which postal code is 11063. Click the link for location on the google map.

The PO is in the basement of the administration building of the University.  I visited the PO on 27 Jan 2017.  By the time of my visit, the PO is closed and staff are out for lunch. So, I dropped the mail into the mailbox hanged outside of the PO.

The mail is handstamped with the PO name and postmark in Burmese.  The mail is cancelled three days after I dropped the mail.

Khaung Daing Post Office

Khaung Daing PO is located on Khaung Daing village, Nyaung Shwe township, Shan State (South).  Click the link for the exact location on the map. The PO is grade 6 PO and its postal code is 06088.  The nearest attraction to this PO is Khaung Daing hot spring where you can take the bath in natural hot spring water.  The post office itself is attached to the private tuition and sunflower seeds production where you can see the process.

Shwenyaung Post Office

Shwenyaung PO is located on Shwenyaung township, Shan State (South).  Click the link for the exact location on the map. During my visit on 1 Nov 2016, I reached there in the early morning. I had no chance to send the mail out.  The PO is grade 4 PO and its postal code is 06012.

Mobile Post Office (Myanmar Post)

Myanmar Post run the Mobile PO to attract tourists to send mails and postcards.  The trial of the project is run from 1 Oct 2016, but the actual launching date is 9 Oct 2016 (which is UPU day).  According to the MPS members, the mobile PO stopped at Shwedagon East gate for half day, and later move on to the Bogyoke Aung San market (Scott market).  The PO accepts ordinary mail, registered mail, EMS, sell postcards and stamps.

The cancellation used on soft launching date of 1 Oct used "YANGON G.P.O" while the actual one used "YANGON".  See below covers for comparison.
